How to Make a Guest Wi-Fi QR Code for a Café, Office or Rental
Quick answer: Use your guest network name, matching security type and current password to create a Wi-Fi QR. Test it on a phone that is not already connected before displaying the sign.
Collect the router details first
Write down the exact network name, including spaces and capitalization. Confirm the security setting and current guest password in your router's interface or with the person who manages the network. A Wi-Fi QR stores connection details; it does not configure a router, grant access to a different network or bypass a hotel-style browser login page.
Create and test the code
- Open the Wi-Fi QR code generator.
- Enter the guest network name and select the matching security option. Choose the open-network option only if the network genuinely has no password.
- Enter the password exactly and enable Hidden network only when the SSID is hidden.
- Download a plain, high-contrast PNG or SVG.
- Scan it with a guest device that is not already connected, accept the connection prompt and confirm internet access.
Does the QR hide the Wi-Fi password?
No. Common Wi-Fi QR content includes the network credentials in a readable format. Anyone who receives the code may decode those details. Display a guest-network code rather than a code for a network containing private work devices. QRVisual generates the static image in your browser; that does not make a printed credential secret.
Make a sign guests can understand
Print a short instruction such as “Scan to join Guest Wi-Fi,” with the network name and a fallback way to ask for help. Position it where people can hold a phone comfortably without blocking a queue. Keep the QR on a flat area with a clear border; a small code on a reflective reception plaque may be harder to scan than a simple paper card.
Give staff a copy of the final artwork and label it with the network it belongs to. If multiple floors or properties use different credentials, use a separate sign for each network and check that the labels do not get mixed up.
What happens when you change the password?
The old image continues to contain the old credentials. Generate a new Wi-Fi code, test it and replace every displayed copy. An editable web link is not a substitute for updating an ordinary static Wi-Fi payload. For hidden networks, enterprise authentication or captive portals, phone compatibility may vary; provide a manual connection option.
If a phone reads the details but cannot connect, verify the router settings. If it cannot read the image at all, follow the scan troubleshooting checklist.
